King Abdullah II of Jordan and his son, Crown Prince Al Hussein, visited the Fortress of Machaerus.
He was received by Tourism Minister Makram Queisi, who briefed him on the tourism development plan for the fortress. The fortress is one of the five sites of the Christian pilgrimage trail, approved by the Vatican.
The fortress has seen a 600% surge in visitors compared to last year, leading to a necessary look at improving the services and infrastructure at the site.
They also visited the Jordan River Foundation’s (JRF) Bani Hamida Women Weaving Project, which is reviving the craft of weaving and traditional Bedouin rug-making. Over 1,600 women from 13 villages have been empowered by the weaving project.
