The Emir of Qatar marks his 45th birthday today.
Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the leader of Qatar, is celebrating his 45th birthday. He is the son of former Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and has been on the throne since 2013.
Tamim was born on 3 June 1980 to Emir Hamad and his second wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned in Doha. He is one of the former ruler’s 24 children.
He was educated in the United Kingdom and trained at Sandhurst; he graduated from the latter in 1998. The Emir is known to be fluent in Arabic, English and French.

Tamim served in the Qatar Armed Forces and became the heir to the throne in 2003 after his older brother, Sheikh Jassim, renounced his claim to the throne.
The Emir has been heavily involved in sports and is a member of the International Olympic Committee. He was also instrumental in Qatar hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Tamim became the Emir of Qatar on 25 June 2013 after his father stepped down.
The Emir has three wives and 13 children.
