Queen Sofía of Spain attended a conference on the American Revolution at the Royal Theatre of Madrid.
The Queen was present at the “Conference on the crucial contributions to the American Revolution of the historical figures ‘Bernardo de Gálvez’ and ‘Francisco de Saavedra’ ” in Madrid on 6 July.
Her Majesty was joined by the likes of the Chief of the Defence Staff, Teodoro López Calderón; the President of the Board of Directors of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, Pilar Lladó; and the President of the Academy of Military Sciences and Arts, Jaime Domínguez Buj.
The President and CEO of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, María Begoña Santos, began the evening with a welcome statement and explanation of the presentations.
Gonzalo Quintero, author of Bernardo de Gálvez: Spanish Hero of the American Revolution, shared his insight alongside James Giesler, who wrote Francisco de Saavedra’s American Revolutionary War. Both presentations helped to highlight the Spanish role in the American Revolution in the late 1700s.
The evening concluded with a concert “Sounds of Spain and America” performed by the Royal Guard Music Unit and María Dolores Gaitán as piano soloist.
The Queen Sofia Spanish Institute organised the event alongside the Academy of Military Sciences and Arts and the Queen Sofia Foundation. It was all done within the framework of the “America&Spain250” initiative to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States.
Queen Sofía also attended the presentation of the initiative in Miami, Florida, in March of this year.
