The Spanish Royal Family has honoured a town in the province of Asturias with the 2024 Exemplary Town of Asturias Award.
King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia presented Sotres with the annual award.
Sotres received the honour for “having conserved and promoted, in a high mountain area, a traditional activity based on extensive and sustainable livestock farming, complemented by a quality agri-food industry and tourism. All of this, with the support of a thriving and young associative movement that maintains an interest in the preservation of heritage, the conservation of the landscape and the improvement of infrastructure, as well as a notable socio-cultural dynamic.”
Their Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses were welcomed by the Mayor of Cabrales, José Sánchez, and met some of the locals from the area before arriving at the Mirador de Sierra Amor to see the panoramic view. The royals then took a family photo at the scenic location.
They later learned about goat farming at the “La Bolera” area and visited the “Escuelona – Casa del Pueblo” for the mining exhibition focused on the Sierra de Ándara and Julio César Fernández.
King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia also met the elderly at the church of San Pedro de Sotres before visiting the children’s park. There, the Princess of Asturias was seen embracing several children.
The day concluded with the King and his heir awarding the 2024 Exemplary Town of Asturias Award to the town.
Sotres is a village in the municipality of Cabrales in Asturias.
