Princess Aiko of Japan attended the opening ceremony of Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ Exhibition at the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka.

During the opening ceremony, Princess Aiko met Miffy, who was dressed as the Girl with a Pearl Earring, and received several curtseys and handshakes.

She also visited the exhibition, which featured several 17th-century Dutch paintings from the collection of the Mauritshuis Museum in the Netherlands. Commenting on the Girl with a Pearl Earring, she said, “Even from quite an angle, I can still feel the girl’s gaze.”

Princess Aiko was led around the exhibition by Martine Gosselink, director of the Mauritshuis. She said, “Art flourishes only under the conditions of peace and democracy, values that are needed now more than ever. I am proud that we can share these values with Japan.”

Her father, Emperor Naruhito, viewed the painting at the Mauritshuis Museum during his visit to the Netherlands in June.

The exhibition will run until 27 September. The Mauritshuis is being renovated until 20 September, leading to an excellent opportunity to loan out the masterpiece.
