King Charles has sent his condolences to the United States after the death of former President Jimmy Carter.

The King’s message to President Joe Biden said: “It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of President Carter. He was a committed public servant, and devoted his life to promoting peace and human rights.

“His dedication and humility served as an inspiration to many, and I remember with great fondness his visit to the United Kingdom in 1977. My thoughts and prayers are with President Carter’s family and the American people at this time.”

King Willem-Alexander and Máxima of the Netherlands also issued a statement, praising Carter for his “to find peaceful solutions for international conflicts.”

Carter, a 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner, died on 29 December at the age of 100. He served as the 39th US President from 1977 to 1981. Carter was the longest-lived US President and the only one to make it to 100.

President Joe Biden has ordered an official state funeral in Washington D.C. More information will be released in due course.
