King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima mourn former US President Jimmy Carter

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands have issued a statement after the death of former US President Jimmy Carter.

Their Majesties’ condolence message said: “It is with great respect that we remember President Jimmy Carter. Driven by an unwavering belief in the strength of people he was wholeheartedly committed to peace and social justice. After his presidency, he and his wife worked tirelessly to find peaceful solutions for international conflicts. He touched people’s hearts and encouraged mutual understanding with both his optimism and empathy. The international community owes him much gratitude.”

Carter, a 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner, died on 29 December at the age of 100. He served as the 39th US President from 1977 to 1981. Carter was the longest-lived US President and the only one to make it to 100.

President Joe Biden has ordered an official state funeral in Washington D.C. More information will be released in due course.
