King Charles has sent his condolences to the Japanese Emperor following a devastating earthquake that hit central Japan on New Year’s Day.
The King wrote to Emperor Naruhito: “My wife and I were profoundly saddened to hear of the devastating loss of life and injuries caused by the series of earthquakes that have struck Japan. We have been following reports closely and I can only say how deeply we feel for all those who are suffering from the dreadful effects of this horrific tragedy. We mourn the many lives cut short and our thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones.”
He added: “We greatly admire the bravery and courage of all those involved in the emergency search and rescue services. I know that my Government stands ready to support the people of Japan at this exceptionally difficult time.”
Emperor Naruhito cancelled the traditional New Year’s Greeting at the Imperial Palace on 2 January out of respect for the victims and destruction. The Emperor and Empress said they “wish that rescue operations and fire-fighting efforts in affected areas will progress as quickly as possible amid the severe cold weather.”
This was going to be the first New Year greeting with the public with no COVID restrictions – the first since the pandemic began in 2020.
A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Japan on New Year’s Day. At least 78 people have died and over 300 injured. Many are still missing with buildings destroyed and rescuers pulling people out of the rubble.
