King Felipe of Spain has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Coimbra.

He was welcomed by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa; the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella; and the Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão. He was received by students of the university with an academic tradition; they had formed a walkway by spreading their cloaks on the grounds.

The King was then invited to deliver his speech in which he said, “The Union is a house built on consensus and solidarity. Its pillars are solid because they are not made to exclude or separate, but are based on the freedom and equality of its citizens .”

After the speech, the King received the doctor’s insignia, which consists of a cap, ring and book. He received an honorary doctorate in law.

This was followed by the national anthems of Spain, Italy and Portugal before the group moved to the Senate Chamber, where the King was presented with his diploma.
