Princess Maria Laura of Belgium has given birth to a son who has the dubious honour of being the first untitled person in the Belgian line of succession in history.
Princess Maria Laura and her husband, William Isvy, became the proud parents of son Albert on 26 January.
Before 1991, the Kingdom of Belgium practised salic law, which meant that only men could inherit the throne. As the legitimate male descendants of King Leopold were constantly Princes of Belgium, there were never any untitled people in the line of succession.
With the introduction of absolute primogeniture, women are now included in the line of succession. Princess Maria Laura, who is 10th in the line of succession, married a commoner, and her son, now 11th in the line of succession, carries his father’s surname.
Nevertheless, he is eligible to succeed as King of the Belgians.
