The Imperial Household of Japan cancelled the New Year greetings with the public on Tuesday, 2 January, after devastating earthquakes rocked the country.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako wanted to cancel the event out of consideration for the victims and damage to Ishikawa Prefecture and the surrounding area.

This was going to be the first New Year greeting with the public with no COVID restrictions – the first since the pandemic began in 2020.

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Japan on New Year’s Day. At least eight people have died and reports suggest many are trapped under rubble.

The extent of the damage is unknown, but many buildings have collapsed with people trapped underneath. Images show a seven storey building completely lying on its side in Wajima City.

A tsumani warning was issued after the earthquake; however, that has now been downgraded to an advisory.
