Queen Jetsun Pema of Bhutan has opened a new museum and cultural centre.
The Queen attended the consecration ceremony of the Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum and Cultural Centre on 30 October.
She was joined for the opening by her two sons, Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel and Prince Ugyen Wangchuck. Other members of the Bhutanese Royal Family attended, including Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck (mother of the reigning monarch), Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck, Prince Ugyen Jigme Wangchuck, and Princess Kesang Choden Wangchuck.
Queen Jetsun Pema and her sons untied the ceremonial ribbon at the palace door and she thanked all those who contributed artefacts from private collections for the new museum. The Royal Family then received a tour of the restored building and were able to view the interactive displays.
The Royal Office for Media said about the new centre and museum: “Under a Royal Kasho granted by His Majesty The King on April 25, 2024, the Wangduecholing Palace Museum and Cultural Centre will operate under the patronage of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen and a Board of Directors.”
The new museum is housed in the restored Wangduechhoeling Palace, built by Trongsa Penlop Jigme Namgyel – the father of the first King of Bhutan. It was also the birthplace of the first monarch, Druk Gyalpo Ugyen Wangchuck.
It took a decade to restore the palace and construction began in 2012 under the guidance of Queen Tseyring Pem Wangchuck.
The Bhutan Foundation led the project in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development, Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum and Cultural Centre will open to the public in 2025.
