Pope Francis announces start of King Baudouin’s beatification process

Pope Francis announced that he would start the beatification process for King Baudouin at the end of the mass at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

King Baudouin reigned in Belgium from 1951 until his death in 1933, and both he and his wife, Queen Fabiola, were known to be very religious. Pope Francis made an impromptu visit to the late King and Queen’s grave yesterday. While there, he spoke about the King’s “courage” in refusing to sign a “deadly law”, referring to the situation in 1990 when King Baudouin refused to sign abortion legislation.

The process of beatification is rather complicated and can take a long time.
