The city of Utrecht in the Netherlands has changed street name signs with Prince Bernhard’s name to include information about his Nazi party membership. Prince Bernhard was the consort of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands.

The signs with “Prins Bernhardlaan” and “Prince Bernhardstraat” now include a QR code, which can be scanned. It leads to Prince Bernahrd’s Wikipedia page, which includes information about his membership of the NSDAP, the Nazi party.

Municipal councillor Dirk-Jan van Vliet told RTV-Utrecht, “The neutral tone works for me. It’s all about not erasing history for me. It is not up to the politicians to pass judgement. People can do that on their own.” Another councillor would rather go further. Ilse Raaijmakers said, “Street names are a tribute. But quite a few names are questionable from a contemporary perspective. For example, information is still missing on mass murderers such as JP Coen and Van Heutsz.”She is referring to two colonial administrators in the former Dutch East Indies. “We would prefer to see these street names disappear. And at the very least, that information is added that goes beyond a QR code.”

Prince Bernhard always denied being a member of the Nazi party, but his original membership card was found in the archives.
