Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has been hospitalised following chest pains.
The press release states, “Her Majesty Queen Margrethe has been admitted to Rigshospitalet this afternoon due to a heart cramp. Queen Margrethe will be admitted over the weekend for observation and further examinations. Her Majesty is tired, but in good spirits. The Royal House will announce when there is news.”
Queen Margrethe reigned as Queen of Denmark from 14 January 1972 until her abdication on 14 January 2024. Her son is now King Frederik X of Denmark. Queen Margrethe’s husband, Henri, died in 2018.
Queen Margrethe has had a number of health issues over the years. Most recently, she underwent major back surgery due to back pain. She was hospitalised in 2024 after breaking her wrist in a fall. She also had injuries to the vertebrae in her neck. Last May, she had a bad cold, which saw her hospitalised for two days.
UPDATE: The issue appears to be angina pectoris, a heart cramp, rather than a full-blown heart attack. The article has been updated to reflect this.
