King Charles and Sir Idris team up at The Other Palace

King Charles was joined by Sir Idris Elba in celebrating the anniversary of the NYMT. 

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT), King Charles III was joined by Sir Idris Elba to meet students taking part in workshops designed to give young people opportunities and experiences in musical theatre.

Sir Idris Elba, who used a grant from The Prince’s Trust (now The King’s Trust) to attend the National Youth Music Theatre, aged 18. He was later named a Knight in the 2026 New Year’s Honours List.

On Thursday, in the studio of The Other Palace, the King and Sir Idris met with a group of young people from CORE Education schools in Birmingham who will be taking part in NYMT workshops designed to develop their confidence and performing skills, including improvisation. His Majesty and Sir Idris also met a group of NYMT’s most experienced young performers, in the theatre’s main auditorium, who are now receiving training at drama schools or working professionally.

On stage, The King cut a cake to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the NYMT and joined a group photo with the young people in attendance before watching a performance by NYMT students.

Before departing, the King met staff and supporters in the foyer to hear about their work in helping NYMT reach its 50th anniversary.
