Princess Amalia has thanked Madrid for its support during a troubling time in her life.

The Princess of Orange travelled to Madrid to dedicate tulips (a main export of the Netherlands) to the city as thanks for their support while she lived in Spain.

Amalia called Madrid a second home during the unveiling of a plaque in the tulip garden at Plaza de Oriente: “Madrid is like a second home to me, especially in a time that was difficult in the Netherlands. In this very Dutch way, I want to thank everyone who took care of my safety and well-being in Madrid.”

The new plaque says in Spanish,”Muchas gracias por mi tiempo en Madrid. ¡Disfruten de los tulipanes!” In English, this means, “Thank you so much for my time in Madrid. Enjoy the tulips!”

The Princess, who is fluent in Spanish thanks to her Argentine mum Queen Máxima, chatted with Madrid’s Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, who had planted the first tulips in the garden in November 2024 alongside Dutch Ambassador to Spain, Roel Nieuwenkamp.

The newly planted flowers are now blooming for the first time.

The Princess spoke about living in Spain for a year in April 2024.

The Princess of Orange, 21, made the comments at the annual King’s Day celebration in the Dutch kingdom.

Amalia told the media that Spain gave her freedom: “I was able to find my freedom there a little more than was possible here.”

She revealed that she had a “fantastic time” while in Spain and that her time there made “life here somewhat possible again.”

The heir to the Dutch throne lived and studied in Madrid, Spain, for a year due to threats she was receiving at the end of 2022.

Sources told NOS that the threat in the Netherlands had not been eliminated but new measures have been put in place that allow Amalia to return home and study in Amsterdam.
