King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden has expressed his support for his daughter after receiving criticism following an interview.
In the interview, he spoke of thinking it was “unfair” that his son lost the crown prince title after a constitutional amendment came into effect six months after his birth.
The full statement is:
“In the fall, I was asked in two interviews about the change of order of succession in 1980 in favor of the first-born child – regardless of gender. I then shared my thoughts on Prince Carl Philip retroactively resigning his position as crown prince. would lose in connection with the amendment of the Constitution.
I was deeply hurt when I heard comments afterwards that I would not support my daughter, Crown Princess Victoria, as heir to the Swedish throne.
I, therefore, want to make it clear that my answers in the interviews should not be interpreted as a criticism of the female succession to the throne or of Crown Princess Victoria.
The female succession to the throne is self-evident to me. The Crown Princess is my successor. She is an extraordinary asset to me, my family and our country. I am proud of her and her tireless work for Sweden.”
