During the dinner, King Willem-Alexander held a speech in which he said, “Peace, freedom, democracy and the rule of law are our highest ideals. At the same time, history has taught us how fragile these values are if they are not protected.
“Where would we be without strong organisations that stand up for the defence of international stability, freedom and peace? Where would we be without the determination of NATO?
“For 76 years – a span of three generations – we have been collectively, unitedly and successfully protecting what is most dear to us in the North Atlantic Treaty area. First, with twelve countries. Then with more. Our alliance grew. Today, we are 32 allies united here, with Finland and Sweden as the most recent members.”

He added, “The Kingdom of the Netherlands never forgets how immense the sacrifices are that are needed to regain lost freedom. This realisation has never left us since the horrors of the Second World War. The gratitude towards the many who fought for our freedom at that time – who gave their lives for it – will always have a place in our hearts.
“The bonds that were forged then can never be broken and are tangible and personal.”
