With the birth of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia’s fourth child, their daughter is making history.
The unnamed princess is the first Swedish princess in history to be born without the style of Royal Highness.
Until 2019, royal babies were all born as Royal Highnesses and had a place in the Royal House. However, King Carl Gustaf revoked the styles of Royal Highness and places in the Royal House from all his grandchildren who were not in the direct line of succession.
However, the King made sure that all of his grandchildren remained as members of the Royal Family and kept their princely and ducal titles.

The revocation applied to the three children of Princess Madeleine and Chris O’Neill and the two children (at the time) of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia.
As such, these grandchildren will not be required to represent the Royal Family as that is limited to those in the Royal House.

This meant that the two sons Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia had at the time, Princes Alexander and Gabriel, lost their royal styles and place in the Royal House. Their parents were not upset with the change, saying that it allowed their sons more freedom to choose their future paths.
The couple’s third child, Prince Julian, also made history as the first grandchild of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia to be born without those honours. And now his little sister also makes history.
