King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Europe’s longest-reigning monarch, has sent a message to the new King Frederik of Denmark on the latter’s accession to the Danish throne.
The friendly message means a lot to both royal families as they are not only friends but also close relatives. King Carl Gustaf and Queen Margrethe are first cousins, making King Carl Gustaf and King Frederik first cousins once removed.
His full message can be read below:
“Your Majesty,
Dear Frederik!
“When you ascend the Danish throne today, I send my and the Swedish people’s congratulations to you and the people of Denmark.
“To you and Queen Mary, I would also like to express my and my family’s most heartfelt wishes for success.
“This day reminds us of the historical community, closeness and cordiality that binds our two countries and families.
“It is my hope that the already very close Danish-Swedish relations will deepen even more in the years ahead.”
The Swedish King celebrated his Golden Jubilee in September 2023 after serving Sweden for 50 years. Queen Margrethe also personally called him in the days before her abdication announcement to notify her cousin of the change that was coming.
