Royals from across the globe have gathered in Paris for the Opening Ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games to cheer on their countries.
Monarchs and royals from Asia to Europe were in the stands to cheer on the athletes from their countries.
Those in attendance included the Princess Royal, King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark, Princess Nora of Liechtenstein, Prince Jigyel of Bhutan, Princess Reema of Saudi Arabia and King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians.
They could be seen cheering and waving to their nations’ athletes as their countries were announced.
The King and Queen of the Netherlands shared a good luck message to the Dutch athletes on social media, saying: “Best of luck to all the [Netherlands’] Olympians in [Paris]! Your hard work, dedication, and passion have brought you here. Enjoy to the fullest and make the Netherlands proud. We’re looking forward to exciting matches and special sporting performances in Paris.”
King Felipe and Queen Letizia took to X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram to share their support for the Spanish athletes, calling them the heart of Spain: “The Spanish Olympic Team goes to the Paris Olympic Games with a large delegation, 383 athletes who fill us with pride for their fight, courage and perseverance. Today and always you are #ElCorazónDeEspaña.”
King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark shared a message of friendship and solidarity on Instagram: “Friendship, solidarity and fair play are the foundations of the Olympic spirit, which in the coming weeks gather nations from across the globe for the world’s largest sporting and sporting event.
“The strong community felt at the Olympic Games has always meant something special to both of us, just as experiencing the Olympic atmosphere together again evokes wonderful memories. We are now ready at the Seinen for the big opening ceremony, where in a little while we will wish our Danish athletes all possible good luck at the Olympic Games in Paris.”
Most of the royals also attended a reception earlier in the day at the Elysee Palace, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.
