Royals expected at the Paris Olympics

It’s time for the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, and royals from across the globe will travel to France to cheer on their countries. Below we reveal which royals will be at the Paris Olympic Games.

Belgium:

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde will attend the Opening Ceremony on 26 July. The night before, they will attend a dinner hosted by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Their Majesties will also open the Lotto Belgium House – for Olympic family, partners, media and Belgian supporters in Paris – on 26 July. The King and Queen will be present at the hockey match between Belgium and Ireland on 27 July and meet Belgian athletes in the Olympic Village.

Princess Elisabeth, Prince Gabriel, Prince Emmanuel and Princess Eléonore will attend the Olympic Games from 7 to 10 August. Princess Astrid will attend the Paralympic Games from 28 to 31 August.

Bhutan: 

Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck will be in Paris as a member of the IOC. The duration of his stay has not been announced, but the Bhutanese Royal Court did confirm to Royal News that the Prince would attend the Opening Ceremony.

Denmark:

King Frederik and Queen Mary will begin their time in France on 25 July with the opening of the Danish Pavilion. Their Majesties will also attend a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron on 26 July. They will attend the Opening Ceremony and various competitions in Paris. They will be joined by Princess Benedikte.

Liechtenstein:

The Princely House of Liechtenstein confirmed to Royal News that Princess Nora will attend the Opening Ceremony in the French capital.

Luxembourg:

Grand Duke Henri, as a member of the IOC, will be in Paris for the duration of the Games. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa will join him and they will both later attend the Paralympics in Paris in August.

Monaco:

Prince Albert, a former Olympian and member of the IOC, will be in Paris for IOC meetings and the Olympic Games.

Norway:

Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit will attend beginning on 6 August.

The Netherlands:

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, an Honorary Member of the International Olympic Committee, will be in France from 25 July to 30 July. Queen Maxima, Princess Amalia and Princess Alexia will attend from 26 to 30 July.

Spain: King Felipe and Queen Letizia will be in Paris beginning on 25 July. They will meet Spanish athletes at the Spanish Embassy and attend a dinner hosted by the IOC on the 25th. They will attend a reception held by French President Emmanuel Macron and the Opening Ceremony on the 26th.

Sweden:

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, who met at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, will be in Paris from 5 to 11 August.

United Kingdom:

Princess Anne, a member of the IOC, will attend the Olympic Games and related IOC events in Paris. An exact schedule for the royal has not been revealed.

  • It is also likely that Qatar’s Sheikh Tamin, Jordan’s Prince Feisal, and Saudi Arabia’s Princess Reema will attend as they are members of the IOC. However, their attendance has not been confirmed.
