Queen Camilla hosted a reception at Clarence House for the Medical Detection Dogs charity.
Her Majesty, who serves as patron of Medical Detection Dogs, met supporters and those who have service animals. One of those she spoke to was James Middleton, the younger brother of the Princess of Wales.
Middleton told the Daily Mail about the organisation, “I’m mind-blown by what they do. It’s incredible. We can learn from dogs as much as they learn from us.”
The Queen, a dog lover, also met some life-saving dogs trained to detect diseases and illnesses. She dismissed those sceptics who have disregarded research that shows dogs can detect illnesses and save lives. She said that “nature will always lead the way.”
She was seen giving pets to the dogs and praising the work the charity does. Her Majesty saw demonstrations on how the animals detect certain diseases. A yellow Labrador, Jodie, showed how it detects symptoms related to bowel cancer.
Queen Camilla also spoke to guests, including one named Lucy and her service dog, Wolfie. He saves her life each time he detects oncoming Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).
After a reception, the Queen saw a demonstration of the organisation’s new electronic nose that is “a collaboration between MDD and Dr Andreas Mershin from RealNose.AI to replicate the dogs’ diagnostic accuracy in scalable technology,” according to Buckingham Palace.
Medical Detection Dogs trains two types of canines. The Bio Detection Dogs work to identify diseases like cancer and Parkinson’s, while Medical Alert Assistance Dogs support those with conditions like diabetes and severe allergies.
Queen Camilla has been their patron since 2014.
