Kuwaiti state TV has announced that Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has died at the age of 86.

There will be 40 days of mourning, and government offices will close for three days.

Sheikh Nawaf was named as Crown Prince in 2006, and he succeeded his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, in 2020. He and his wife, Sharifa Sulaiman Al-Jassim, had four sons and a daughter together.

He has been succeeded by his 83-year-old half-brother Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who was chosen as Crown Prince in 2020.
