King Charles is said to be concerned about the discord between the United States and Canada.
The King, who is monarch over Canada, recently met with outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Sandringham, and according to the politician, they discussed “matters of importance to Canadians — including, above all, Canada’s sovereign and independent future.”
The King reportedly has the American/Canadian issue “particularly on his mind.”
According to The Times, a source close to His Majesty said: “It is business as usual, but with everything on a heightened level of significance. Canada is particularly on his mind. Of course, he knows he has to be mindful of being the UK head of state and the head of state in Canada, as well as being the head of the Commonwealth. It does require delicate diplomacy, given that not everyone’s interests are aligned.”
King Charles will deliver his annual Commonwealth Day Address on 10 March and is expected to stress that countries “come together in friendship” and express his desire for unity.
The United States has entered a trade war with Canada and Mexico. They have placed tariffs of 25% on their goods coming into the United States.
US President Donald Trump has not hidden his dislike for Trudeau and his desire to have Canada become part of the United States, going as far as to call the Prime Ministers “Governor” and stating that Canada should become the 51st state.
Trump has been invited on a historic state visit to the United Kingdom by the King; however, the invitation was extended before the tariffs on Canada (a Commonwealth member) took effect. There has been no indication that the invitation will be rescinded.
