Princess Astrid of Belgium and her husband, Prince Lorenz, have revealed the nicknames their grandchildren gave them.

In an exclusive interview with Wim Dehandschutter for their 40th wedding anniversary, the couple spoke about their grandchildren and the time they spend with them.

The Princess and Prince have three grandchildren who love to play in the garden.

About the grandchildren, Princess Astrid said: “They scream and laugh: ‘Nouni, Ninou and Nonno, are you coming?’ Those small joys are worth gold.”

With that comment, Astrid revealed the nicknames that Archduchess Anna Astrid, Archduke Maximilian and Archduchess Alix have given them.

Prince Lorenz is called Nonno, while Astrid is called Ninou. Even Queen Paola, the children’s great-grandmother, has a nickname: Nouni.

Princess Astrid chose her nickname herself as it is a reversal of the syllables of Queen Paola’s nickname. Astrid’s father, King Albert, also called his grandmother Nouni.

Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz married on 22 September 1984.
