Empress Emerita of Japan to undergo surgery for broken femur

Empress Emerita Michiko of Japan is to undergo surgery after a fall.

The 89-year-old mother of Emperor Naruhito will have surgery on a broken right femur after a fall on Sunday, 6 October.

She fell at her residence in Tokyo.

The Empress Emerita will undergo surgery on 8 October at the University of Tokyo Hospital where she will remain for a period afterwards.

Empress Emerita Michiko experienced severe pain in her right leg after her fall on Sunday, and the Imperial Household Agency said examinations revealed a fracture in her upper right thighbone.

She will turn 90 on 20 October.
