Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg has already chosen his abdication date.

As the country took its first step in the abdication process on 8 October, the Grand Duke named his heir, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, lieutenant representative (or regent).

Grand Duke Henri said then: “But it is clear that it will not last forever. Then we will continue with the second step.”

While there has been no announcement regarding when the official abdication will take place, the Hereditary Grand Duke confirmed that the date is already set.

“Yes, we know [the date]. We have already discussed it,” he told the press, adding that the idea to make him regent was a decision made only by his father.

Guillaume, 42, hopes the transition will allow for “room for modernisation and renewal” in the Grand Ducal Court; however, do not expect everything to change. He plans to keep certain traditions, “A new generation within a monarchy does not immediately mean a revolution.”

Henri served as regent for his father for two years before officially taking over the reins in 2000. We may see a similar time frame with Guillaume’s regency.
