Crown Prince Haakon of Norway is in Jamaica this week in his role as global Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The Crown Prince is promoting the UN’s SDG goals, especially Goal 1, which aims to eliminate poverty, and Goal 14, which seeks to protect marine life. He is championing sustainable development, climate change initiatives, and poverty reduction during his visit to the island nation.

Crown Prince Haakon has been a UN Goodwill Ambassador since 2003. Jamaica, and other states in the Caribbean, are showing signs of climate vulnerability due to human development and rising temperatures. Marine life is increasingly under strain due to tourism and other factors related to change.

On his trip, he will gain firsthand knowledge on how Jamaica is working with local communities to improve climate resilience, especially among the fishing and coastal communities that are most impacted by climate change.

Crown Prince Haakon will meet with local authorities from various communities to discuss challenges and solutions related to poverty and climate change. He will visit the coastal community of Rocky Point to learn more about the Blue Resilience Programme and its impact in the community.

Additionally, the Crown Prince will visit Mount Airy to learn more about water collection efforts in the region and participate in a dialogue with youth leaders at The University of the West Indies. Crown Prince Haakon’s trip concludes on November 20, 2024.
