King Felipe of Spain has attended the inauguration of Argentina’s new leader, Javier Gerardo Milei, in Buenos Aires.
The King, who regularly attends similar events throughout the Spanish-speaking countries, met the President-elect at the San Martín Palace in the morning before travelling to Casa Rosada (the Pink House) in the afternoon, where His Majesty and his Spanish delegation held a meeting with their Argentine counterparts. Outgoing President Alberto Fernández was present at this discussion.
Details of the meetings were not made public.
King Felipe also met with the Spanish community in Argentina to conclude his first day in South America. Argentina has the largest group of Spaniards abroad, so it was important for His Majesty to meet them while in the country.
He will attend the inauguration on Sunday, 10 December, before returning to Spain. His next engagement in Spain is on 12 December.
President-elect Javier Gerardo Milei, 53, was elected in a runoff on 19 November. He is a former professor of economics and author. He’s considered far-right and controversial, with many comparing him to former US President Donald Trump.
The King made the trip to Argentina as the representative of Spain at the inaugurations of the Ibero-American Presidents. He has undertaken this duty since he was the Prince of Asturias, beginning in 1996.
This is King Felipe’s first time as a monarch attending a presidential inauguration in Argentina. He has attended the event in the past while as Prince of Asturias in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011.
