Sweden now has a new princess, and there are tributes in Princess Ines of Sweden’s name.

The King of Sweden announced that his granddaughter was named Ines Marie Lilian Silvia and that she would be the Duchess of Västerbotten.

There are many tributes to the females who came before Ines in her name.

Marie: Marie is her maternal grandmother – the mother of Princess Sofia – and the name is a lasting connection to her maternal family.

Lilian: The late Princess Lilian was special to the entire Royal Family, but none more so than Prince Carl Philip. His family now resides in Villa Solbacken, the longtime home of Lilian and Prince Bertil. Giving his daughter the name of his beloved aunt is a well-deserved tribute to a woman beloved by his family. Princess Ines shares this middle name with her second oldest cousin, Princess Leonore.

Silvia: Little Ines’s final middle name is Silvia, given to her in honour of her paternal grandmother, Queen Silvia. She shares this middle name with her oldest cousin, Princess Estelle.

Her name is not the only way the Swedish Royal Family honoured their female ancestors. Ines is now the Duchess of Västerbotten, and the last holder of that title, through her marriage, was King Carl Gustaf’s mother. Ines will always carry a personal link to the great-grandmother she never got to meet.
