Princess Mabel and the Duke of Edinburgh attend funeral of U.S. President Jimmy Carter

Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau and the Duke of Edinburgh attended the funeral of U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

The former president died on 29 December 2024 at the age of 100. He was president of the United States from 1977 to 1981.

The Duke of Edinburgh represented the British royal family at the funeral in Washington, and he had also earlier paid his respects as the president’s casket lay in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda. Princess Mabel appears to have attended not in representation of the Dutch royal family but rather in a professional capacity.

She posted a tribute to the late president on her Instagram page which read, “With great affection, respect and sadness, I remember President Jimmy Carter – who I had the privilege and pleasure to work with at @theelders_org. I learned so much from him. Thanks to him, in 2009, The Elders decided to speak out on how religion and tradition – which are normally forces for good in our lives – too often get misused to justify discrimination against girls and women. This became the basis for their work to advance gender equality and to end child marriage.

“I will always remember President Jimmy Carter for his relentless commitment to justice, fairness, equality and peace; for always standing up for his values; for his dignity, humility and impressive work ethic; for his courage and moral leadership; and for his eternal devotion to his beloved Rosalynn, family and friends. On a more personal note, I will never forget his support and prayers for my late husband, me and our young daughters after Friso’s accident in 2012.

“As President, Jimmy Carter was a servant leader. Post-presidency, he became a citizen diplomat – working tirelessly to advance public health, including eradication of the Guinea worm, monitor elections, promote peace, build homes, and promote women’s rights. As a result, hundreds of millions of people across the globe are living better lives.

“I will try to remember and honour President Jimmy Carter by taking small actions every day to make a difference, and by upholding his belief that goodness will ultimately triumph in this troubled world.”
