The line of succession to the Swedish throne

With the birth of a new Swedish royal baby, we are taking a look at the current line of succession to the Swedish throne.

Sweden’s succession laws are governed by absolute primogeniture, where the eldest child, regardless of gender will succeed to the throne.

Only the King’s legitimate descendants can succeed him. They must be brought up in Sweden and be a member of the Church of Sweden (Lutheran). If they marry without the consent of the government or become the head of state of another country, they lose their succession rights.

Who is in line to succeed King Carl Gustaf?

  1. Crown Princess Victoria
  2. Princess Estelle
  3. Prince Oscar
  4. Prince Carl Philip
  5. Prince Alexander
  6. Prince Gabriel
  7. Prince Julian
  8. Princess Ines
  9. Princess Madeleine
  10. Princess Leonore
  11. Prince Nicolas
  12. Princess Adrienne

Of those in the line of succession, only Crown Princess Victoria, her family, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine are members of the Royal House. Although the others have succession rights, they are only members of the Royal Family and do not hold the styles of Royal Highness.
