Spain’s Princess Leonor has received two new honours ahead of her 19th birthday.
Leonor, 18, has been given the Medal of Asturias and made Honorary Mayor of Oviedo.
In two different ceremonies, the Princess of Asturias was honoured ahead of the annual Princess of Asturias Awards.
Princess Leonor was first made an Honorary Mayor of Oviedo at the Oviedo City Hall and presented with a baton of command. She also took a photo in front of a commemorative plaque and signed the golden book to mark the occasion.
She was given the honour in “special connection of the Royal House with Asturias and Oviedo, as well as Leonor’s position as honorary president of the Princess of Asturias Foundation,” according to Casa Real.

This allows the Princess of Asturias to further strengthen her ties to Oviedo and Asturias. Her father, King Felipe, was also made an honorary mayor during his time as Prince of Asturias 36 years ago.
In the library of the University of Oviedo, the Princess was awarded the Medal of Asturias “in her own right” as heir to the Spanish throne.
The President of the Principality of Asturias awarded the medal to Her Royal Highness before the teenager addressed those assembled to thank them for their support: “These words are for you, for all the people of this land who have always supported me, who give me your love and make me feel welcomed and happy on all occasions.”
After both occasions, Leonor greeted the public outside with handshakes and friendly chats to get to know the people of the area better.

The Prince or Princess of Asturias is the title of the Spanish heir to the throne. Leonor has held the title since her grandfather’s abdication and father’s ascension to the throne in 2014.
