Royals and the Nobels

The Nobel Prizes are handed out each year on 10 December, Alfred Nobel Day, and royals from the Norwegian and Swedish royal families attend the ceremonies.

The Nobel Peace Prize is handed out in Oslo each year while the other Nobel Prizes are presented in Stockholm – allowing both the Norwegian and Swedish royal families to take part.

In Norway, King Harald, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit usually attend the afternoon Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony at Oslo City Hall. However, the royals are only there as attendees.  The King does not personally present the Nobel Peace Prize. That honour is done by the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

A Nobel Peace Prize Banquet is held in the evening at the Grand Hotel in Oslo. The King and Queen usually attend alongside the Crown Prince Couple; however, in 2024 Their Majesties will be absent from the banquet. Tiaras are also not seen at the Norwegian Nobel events.

Over in neighbouring Sweden, the Swedish Royal Family attends the awarding of the Nobel Prizes at Stockholm Concert Hall. Unlike in Norway, the King of Sweden presents the award medal and diploma. Each event on the schedule is also a tiara event for the Swedish royals.

A banquet is held in the evening at Stockholm City Hall with King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Sofia, and Princess Madeleine usually in attendance. Madeleine’s husband occasionally attends when his schedule allows.

The banquet is not the last Nobel event on the calendar for the Swedish royals. On 11 December, the King hosts a dinner at the Royal Palace in honour of the laureates. The Royal Family attends and mingles with the winners and their guests.

The events in Norway and Sweden are one of the most important on the royal calendars each year. It is looked forward to by royal watchers each December – mainly for the fashion choices. What tiara and designers will they wear this year? We don’t have to wait long to find out.
