Queen Máxima of the Netherlands is in the Philippines in her role as special advocate of the Secretary General of the United Nations for inclusive finance for development.
The visit began on Monday and focused on financial inclusion, such as connectivity and digital payments. The Philippines still has a large amount of unbanked adults despite the proportion of adults owning a bank account rising to 51,4% in 2021. Queen Máxima highlighted the need for more affordable financial services, which are crucial for the many small islands.
Queen Máxima made several field visits, such as to a fisherfolk community, but she also attended several meetings with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Secretary of the Department of Finance (DOF) Ralph G. Recto, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Dr. Eli M. Remolona Jr., and others.
