Queen Sofía is set to be presented with Spain’s highest honour.
The Queen will receive the Order of the Golden Fleece from her son, King Felipe, for her “dedication and commitment to Spain.”
This is the highest distinction the King presents, and he has only given to one other person during his ten-year reign: his daughter – the Princess of Asturias.
The honour was revealed on 10 January in Spain’s Official State Gazette. King Felipe issued a Royal Decree on 29 October 2024 – four days before his mother’s 86th birthday.
The decree said: “Wanting to bear witness to My Royal appreciation to Her Majesty Queen Sofía and to publicly recognise her dedication and commitment to the service of Spain and the Crown, Having heard the Council of Ministers, I hereby grant my mother, Her Majesty Queen Sofía, the Collar of the Insigne Order of the Golden Fleece.”
Casa Real did not reveal the honour for Queen Sofía in October due to the devastating flooding in Valencia.
No date has been set for the investiture.
Sofía’s husband, King Juan Carlos, is already a member of the order, as is King Felipe and Princess Leonor.
