Queen Silvia of Sweden has purchased the first Mayflower of the year, following years of tradition.

The Queen greeted Elsa Bellman Falk and Kebba Mbye of Djurgården Football at Stockholm Palace alongside Mayflower’s general secretary Åse Henell to buy the first flower of the year. With her purchase, the official sale of the flowers has begun in Sweden.

Alexis Monnakgotla Svensson from Stockholm designed this year’s flower.

Queen Silvia, as patron, is the first person to buy the flower each year in support of children and young people in vulnerable situations.

The Majblomman is a non-profit organisation that works to stop child poverty in Sweden.

Thousands of children will sell the Mayflower until the first of May and proceeds will be given to support children in families struggling financially.
