Queen Silvia of Sweden has been forced to pull out of a joint event with Queen Sonja of Norway after a death in her family.

Queen Silvia was due to open an exhibition at Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde in Stockholm alongside her Norwegian counterpart on 20 September. Queen Sonja will now attend alone.

The Swedish Queen is in mourning after the death of her sister-in-law, Charlotte Sommerlath, over the weekend. Charlotte was married to Silvia’s only living brother, Ralf.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia will travel to the funeral alongside Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine.

The Royal Court’s Information Department Manager, Margareta Thorgen, told Svenskdam: “The funeral will take place on Friday and it will be private.”
