Princess Theodora of Greece has married her American fiancé, Matthew Kumar, in Athens.
The 41-year-old Princess and Mr Kumar were married on 28 September in the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation in Athens in the presence of close friends and family.
The wedding, which was delayed four years due to COVID, took place at 5:30 pm with members of the Danish, Serbian and Spanish royal families in attendance. Queen Sofia of Spain, Princess Benedikte of Denmark and Princess Irene of Greece, the siblings of King Constantine, were on hand to watch their niece marry. Queen Margrethe of Denmark was unable to attend as she is recovering from time in hospital.
Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia also attended.
Crown Prince Pavlos walked his younger sister down the aisle in place of their father, King Constantine, who died in 2023.
His Eminence Metropolitan of Syros, Dorotheos II conducted the ceremony.
Groomsmen and bridesmaids included Prince Nikolaos (bride’s brother), Prince Philippos (bride’s brother), Princess Maria-Olympia (bride’s niece), Prince Achilles-Andreas (bride’s nephew) and Arrietta Morales de Grecia (bride’s niece).
The Princess wore a bespoke wedding gown by Greek designer Celia Kritharioti and the Greek Royal Family’s Cartier Khedive of Egypt Tiara.
The Greek Royal House explained why the couple chose to have their wedding in Greece: “The couple’s desire to have their wedding in Athens reflects their love for Greece, the strong ties they maintain with the country and their desire to share Greek culture and Greek hospitality and identity with their guests.”
Princess Theodora is the daughter of the late King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie (who was born a Princess of Denmark). She was born in London after her family’s exile from Greece. The Greek monarchy was deposed in the 1970s, and the Greek Royal Family was only allowed to return after decades abroad.
