Princess Martha Louise of Norway has called out a Norwegian media outlet for “spreading lies” about her fiancé, Durek Verrett.
On the Heart Smart Convos podcast and her official Instagram, the 52-year-old says that lies are being repeated until everyone believes them about her American fiancé.
She wrote on Instagram: “Se og Hør continues spreading lies about my fiancé @shamandurek. Like I said on the podcast @heartsmart_convos Se og Hør just repeats the lies until everybody believes them. This time they are repeating the lie that Durek was not from a wealthy family as a child(because his mom says so who got money from spreading whatever lies she could), when the truth is that he grew up in a good neighborhood, his mom left him at an early age and it was, in reality, his mom not having money, not him. She wasn’t even around. Durek’s father’s bankruptcy came after Durek moved out, so he was not affected by his father’s bankruptcy.”
She went on to share images of Durek’s childhood home in California and a statement from Danielle Washington, one of Durek’s childhood friends, who said the American was one of the wealthiest in school – a contrast to what the Norwegian magazine has said.
The Princess stressed that his childhood wealth is not important to her and that she is speaking out because she is “sick and tired of Se og Hør’s lies about us. And about Durek.”
The Princess called this type of journalism “highly unethical” with the sole purpose of harming people.
She also asked the public not to believe what the outlet says about her or Durek and recognised that media coverage could worsen as they get closer to their August wedding date.
Princess Martha Louise and Durek Verrett have been met with criticism and racism since their relationship was made public.
The Norwegian Royal Family has shown their support for Martha Louise and Durek and has condemned the discrimination he has faced since his relationship with the Princess was made public.
The King and Queen released a statement in 2022 stating that they “deplore the racist attitudes that Durek Verrett has had to contend with, especially on social media.”
“We wish to continue the efforts to promote a society based on tolerance, where people do not make hasty judgements about others but sincerely seek to find common ground. We wish to achieve a generous, welcoming society where there is room, and respect, for one and all – not just those who are our friends and family but the wider society we are building together,” they added.
