Princess Leonore of Sweden is marking her tenth birthday today.
The Princess is celebrating her special day in Florida with her family.
She will likely be in school for most of the day before celebrations with family. This will be the last time Leonore marks her birthday in the United States as she and her family are due to move to Sweden later this year.
Leonore, who holds dual American-Swedish citizenship, is the closest American in line to the Swedish throne.
Princess Leonore Lilian Maria was born on 20 February 2014 in New York City to Princess Madeleine and Chris O’Neill (a British-American citizen). She is the second grandchild of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, and at the time of her birth, she was fifth in the Swedish line of succession and the spare to Princess Estelle (the daughter of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel).
The King announced her name and duchy (Duchess of Gotland) in a Cabinet meeting a couple of days after her birth.
She was christened on her parents’ first wedding anniversary on 8 June 2014 in the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace. Her godparents are her maternal aunt, Crown Princess Victoria; paternal aunt, Tatjana d’Abo; paternal uncle by marriage, Count Ernst Abensperg und Traun; maternal cousin, Patrick Sommrlath; and friends of her parents, Alice Bamford and Louise Gottlieb.
Leonore has two younger siblings, Prince Nicolas (b. 2015) and Princess Adrienne (b. 2018). She currently resides with her family in Miami, Florida.
The Princess enjoys horseracing and is known to be fluent in both English and Swedish – the native tongues of her parents. She is also known to be quite close with her cousin, Estelle.
Leonore is now eighth in the line of succession and no longer holds the style of Royal Highness or place in the Royal House. With the birth of Princess Estelle’s brother, Prince Oscar, in March 2016, she is no longer the spare in her generation. Her grandfather chose to revoke the styles of Royal Highness and place in the Royal House from his grandchildren not in the direct line of succession to allow them more freedom as they grow up and to streamline the monarchy. With this change, only Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar will be required to undertake duties on behalf of the Crown.
