Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark dies

Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark has died at the age of 85.

The Prince died in Athens, Greece, on 28 July 2024 in hospital.

He was the last surviving grandchild of King George I of Greece and the last surviving great-grandchild of King Christian X of Denmark. The Prince was also a first cousin to the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

His burial will take place on 1 August 2024 in Athens.

Prince Michael was born on 7 January 1939 in Rome, Italy, to Prince Christopher of Greece and Denmark and Princess Françoise d’Orléans of France.

He grew up largely abroad in exile and was an orphan from the age of 15. The Prince served in the Greek Coast Guard and worked as an author and historian.

Prince Michael was married to Marina Karella with whom he had two daughters: Princess Alexandra and Princess Olga. They had four grandchildren.
