Queen Sofia of Spain joined her family for the funeral of Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark.
The Prince’s funeral took place on 1 August in Athens.
Queen Anne-Marie, Crown Prince Pavlos, Crown Princess Marie Chantal and Princess Alexia were among the Greek Royal Family who attended. Spain’s Queen Sofia (born Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark) also attended her second cousin’s funeral.
Prince Michael died at the age of 85 in a hospital in Athens on 28 July 2024.
He was the last surviving grandchild of King George I of Greece and the last surviving great-grandchild of King Christian X of Denmark. The Prince was also a first cousin to the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Michael was born on 7 January 1939 in Rome, Italy, to Prince Christopher of Greece and Denmark and Princess Françoise d’Orléans of France.
He grew up largely abroad in exile and was an orphan from the age of 15. The Prince served in the Greek Coast Guard and worked as an author and historian.
Prince Michael was married to Marina Karella with whom he had two daughters: Princess Alexandra and Princess Olga. They had four grandchildren.
