Pope Francis is in critical condition after a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis.

The Pope, 88, is said to have suffered a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis on Saturday that resulted in high-flow oxygen therapy and a blood transfusion.

The Vatican said of His Holiness’s health: “The Holy Father’s condition continues to be critical, therefore, as explained yesterday, the Pope is not out of danger.”

They added that the Pope spent the day “alert” and can sit in an armchair. He is in “more pain than yesterday.”

He remains at Gemelli Hospital in Rome.

His Holiness has been hospitalised since Friday, 14 February, but received an updated diagnosis of double pneumonia last week.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936 in Argentina, Pope Francis has been the head of the Catholic Church since the abdication of Pope Benedict in 2013.
