The Norwegian Royal Family has attended the 200th anniversary of the first Norwegian emigration to America.

King Harald, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus participated in the celebration on America’s Independence Day, 4 July.

The event took place in Stavanger, and the Royal Family arrived on the Royal Yacht for the public celebration in the city centre.

Thousands attended the festivities, which partially took place in the newly restored Stavanger Cathedral. The cathedral and city are both celebrating their 900th anniversary this year.

To mark the anniversary, a replica ship set sail for New York; it will make its way across the Atlantic this summer.

The celebration also included a tribute to Queen Sonja as the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to her on her 88th birthday.

The anniversary marks the 200th anniversary of when the ship Restoration set sail for the US on 4 July 1825, with 52 Norwegians on board. Their arrival in New York is considered the beginning of Norwegian emigration to the United States.
