The bond between Princess Sofia and Princess Estelle was cemented at the christening of Princess Ines last month.
When Princess Estelle was named godmother to Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia’s youngest child, Princess Ines, it was just the latest example of how close Sofia and Estelle have become.
Estelle doesn’t know a life without Sofia, as she was dating Carl Philip when Estelle was born. Sofia also attended Estelle’s christening in 2012. When it came time for Sofia to wed Carl Philip in 2015, Estelle was one of the bridesmaids who supported Sofia.
When the Royal Family and guests appeared on the Royal Palace balcony for the wedding, everyone watching got to see how close Estelle was to Sofia. Estelle reached out to get a hug from her new aunt while Sofia was greeting the guests. And the new royal didn’t seem to mind; Sofia was pictured smiling before giving a sweet hug to her new niece.

Estelle has also sat in the carriage on National Day alongside Sofia, and people have noticed Sofia checking on Estelle during events to make sure she is doing okay. One example of this was during a balcony appearance, where Sofia was seen making sure Estelle was warm on a chilly April day in Sweden to celebrate King Carl Gustaf’s birthday.
In SVT’s Year with the Royal Family several years ago, Princess Estelle gave flowers to Princess Sofia, showing how much she cared about her aunt.
The royal ladies’ bond also extends to music. Princess Sofia and Princess Estelle have attended summer concerts together at Borgholm Castle. The pair have been seen dancing and laughing as the music played, and giving each other hugs upon arrival.
At other joint engagements with the Royal Family, the aunt and niece pair have been seen enjoying their time together, so it came as no surprise when Estelle, at only the age of 13, was named a godmother to Princess Ines in 2025.
After the christening, the teenager was seen staying close to her aunt, uncle and cousins as they appeared for photos. The other godparents joined in the quick photo session later.

Of course, Prince Carl Philip is known to be very close to his nieces and nephews, but the sweet bond between his wife and eldest niece is one that has caught everyone’s eye.
