King Albert II of Belgium has undergone surgery for skin cancer.

The 91-year-old former monarch underwent surgery on his face, and he has stitches between his upper lip and nose.

It is not known when the preventative surgery took place.

This is the sixth time King Albert has been treated for skin cancer since 2011.

The Belgian Royal Palace confirmed reports of His Majesty’s surgery to Belgian news reporter Wim Dehandschutter and HLN.

The King made his first appearance in five months last week at a reception in Brussels.

King Albert has a long list of health issues, including back problems and issues with his heart. He abdicated the throne in favour of his eldest son, Philippe, in 2013.
