King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is on a mission to visit all of Sweden’s 21 counties on the occasion of his Golden Jubilee. Yesterday, the King and his wife, Queen Silvia, visited the county of Västerbotten and the residence city of Umeå.

The King and Queen were received by Governor Helene Hellmark Knutsson and her husband, Richard Hellmark. They visited the Västerbotten museum, where they received information about the impact of Storm Hans on the forests of Västerbotten.

They then travelled in a horse-drawn carriage to the town hall square, where the Umeå National Guard’s band played the Jubilee March. The King gave a speech in which he said, “It’s only been a little over a year since I stood here on Rådhustorget. Then we celebrated your city’s 400th birthday. Today, we celebrate two other anniversaries. The first is my own 50th anniversary. Yes, it has been that long since I succeeded my grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf, and became Sweden’s King and head of state. The assignment contains many different parts. But one of the things the Queen and I appreciate most is travelling around Sweden and meeting people.”

The King concluded the county visit by planting an Ornäs birch and unveiling a plaque commemorating the anniversary. The Queen watered the newly planted tree for him.

The King of Sweden will reach 50 years on the throne on 15 September 2023.
